'Wobbly' bridge closes for checks
Millennium Bridge
5m was spent installing dampers to stop the bridge swaying
London's Millennium Bridge is closing for its first general inspection.

Engineers will this week carry out a survey into the condition of the 18.2m pedestrian bridge which spans the Thames, linking the City with Bankside.

Sections will be removed to check the dampers, and lamp changes and extra cleaning will take place from 1000 GMT to 1600 GMT, Tuesday to Thursday.

It closed days after opening in June 2000 and 5m was spent installing shock absorbers to stop the bridge swaying.

Ownership of the bridge was transferred to the Corporation of London in February 2002, when the bridge re-opened following successful remedial work to remove its 'wobble' .
