Tube lines 'to close for months'
Tube platform
A third of all tracks are due to be replaced by 2010
The entire Waterloo and City Line and sections of the Northern Line may shut for months at a time for maintenance work, London Underground has said.

Managing director Tim O'Toole told London Assembly's transport committee it was a move he was prepared to take to get the "payback".

Metronet and Tube Lines took over maintenance under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) scheme in 2003.

The contract requires a third of all tracks to be replaced by 2010.

So far, only 4% of them have been done.

The firms have 30-year contracts worth 15bn and combined profits of almost 100m.

A Transport for London (TfL) spokesman said no decision has been yet and passengers would be made aware of any closures.
