Olympian Kelly Holmes said the Eye added to London's skyline |
Double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes has been celebrating again - this time though it is the London Eye's fifth anniversary. Bosses have splashed out on thousands of bottles of champagne and orange juice for Tuesday's passengers.
The 135m high structure has attracted up to 18m people and won more than 40 awards for tourism and architecture.
The 34-year-old athlete said: "I just love the Eye. It's a wonderful addition to the London skyline."
Millions of visitors
A London Eye spokesman said the event "marks the beginning of a new phase for the London Eye which will grace the capital's skyline for years to come".
The structure was originally only granted planning permission for five years, but in 2003 it was extended for at least 24 years.
Rick Willis, chairman of the London Eye company, said: "Visitors have come in their millions to experience and marvel at the wheel and this is our way of saying thank you for making it a success."
