Two north London hospitals have drawn up strict new hygiene guidelines to combat the spread of the hospital superbug MRSA. Nurses uniforms at North Middlesex and Chase Farm hospital, both in Enfield, will be laundered on site and ties and wrist watches will be banned.
Both hospitals have high rates of the bacteria-busting bug.
Patients and visitors will be issued with information leaflets to make them aware of the dangers of MRSA.
In 2003/4 there were 94 cases of MRSA in Barnet Chase Farm hospital and 53 cases at North Middlesex Hospital.
Hospitals in London, including others in the North Central London sector, have high MRSA bacteraemia (blood stream infections) rates.
According to the National Audit Office, hosptial-aquired infections, such as MRSA, kill up to 5,000 people a year in the UK.
