An east London art gallery has secured a 3m grant to fund a major revamp. The Whitechapel Gallery will use cash from the Heritage Lottery to build an extension to the 100-year-old site.
The plans include a restaurant, bookshop and opening up the Whitechapel archive to the public for the first time in 100 years.
A gallery spokesman said the attraction would become an even better resource for the community and help to attract new visitors to east London.
The scheme will almost double gallery space and triple the capacity for local schools as well as working with the Metropolitan University to provide new training schemes.
MP for Bethnal Green and Bow Oona King said the gallery had been a "cultural landmark in east London for over 100 years."
"The launch of its 10m expansion programme has been made possible by the 3.26m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund," she said.
