Organisers are hoping to visit all schools in Lambeth |
Police in Lambeth will be visiting schools in the area in a bid to tackle homophobic bullying. The new project aims to train staff in how to handle the problem and raise awareness among pupils.
Lambeth Police and Lambeth Positive Activities for Young People have gained government funding for the scheme, which will run until March 2006.
A police spokesman said the word 'gay' itself had become a widespread playground taunt.
'Chain of abuse'
PC Andy Hewlett, from Lambeth Police, said: "Homophobic terminology is prevalent in many of our schools.
"The terminology is used openly, goes largely unchallenged and is totally unacceptable.
"Words are often the start of the chain of abuse that can lead to more serious, and often violent crimes."
Steven Penrose, Chair of the Lambeth Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Trans(BGBT) Forum, said other parts of London should adopt the scheme.
"The current gap in diversity and bullying awareness in our schools can only contribute to homophobia and crime in our wider community," he said.
Organisers of the project are hoping to visit primary and secondary schools in the area to inform staff of their legal duties when tackling homophobia.
They also plan to introduce methods of dealing with the derogatory use of gay and slang terms for lesbians and gays.
