City executive John Monckton, fatally stabbed during a burglary, was well-respected in both his private and business life.

Mr Monckton, 49, lived with his wife Homeyra and nine-year-old daughter in exclusive Chelsea, west London.

It was there that he was stabbed when two men broke into the house, also injuring Mrs Monckton.

Their daughter phoned the police, but their other daughter, 12, was not at home on Monday night.

The Moncktons are a well-established Catholic family, according to a spokesman of the Roman Catholic diocese of Westminster.

Apart from his outstanding career in the City, he also devoted a great deal of his time to charitable works
Monckton family statement

Mr Monckton was a cousin of Rosa Monckton, a close friend of Princess Diana and wife of Sunday Telegraph editor Dominic Lawson.

He was also related to the late owner of The Universe newspaper, Lord Monckton.

The family were regulars at the church of Our Most Holy Redeemer and St Thomas More, near their three-storey town house, the church spokesman said.

Mr Monckton's family released a statement describing him as an "incredibly gentle and thoughtful man".

It continued: "The Monckton family is profoundly shocked by the murder of John Victor and the attack on Homeyra.

"Obviously our thoughts are very much with her and her children.

"Apart from his outstanding career in the City, he also devoted a great deal of his time to charitable works.

"We are all praying for him."

Successful career

Mr Monckton was the managing director of bonds at Legal and General Investment Management, which he joined in February 1996.

His job involved heading the actively managed bonds department and overall responsibility for investment strategy.

The division headed by Mr Monckton manages more than 26 billion of assets and is seen as one of the top three players in the corporate bond market.

John had a great intellect and was a man of the utmost integrity and kindness.
