Shoe shiners will be given the chance to set up their own business |
Homeless people in London are being given the chance to earn a wage by becoming shoe shiners. Thames Reach Bondway, a homeless charity, is recruiting people for StreetShine - a shoe polishing service for office workers.
The 3.75 charge for cleaner shoes will go back to the charity but shiners will receive a wage and can keep any tips.
Organisers are hoping to set up a dry cleaning business as part of the scheme which could be set up across the UK.
A spokesman from the charity said StreetShine gave homeless people the opportunity to earn a living and learn valuable new skills. "The shiners are supported through a three-step pathway, starting by working part-time," he said.
"As shiners gain self-esteem, self-confidence and work skills, they can progress to full-time employment within the company, giving them access to more training and development.
"There will be franchise opportunities for those that wish to strike out on their own. This gives employees full independence while still allowing shiners to benefit from organisational and brand support."
