London's summers could be as hot as New York's by the end of the century if global warming does not slow down, according to a report. The UK capital's summer evenings are already warmer than surrounding areas' as the urban landscape absorbs solar energy, the Energy Saving Trust says.
Rewards for energy efficiency to reduce climate-changing carbon dioxide emissions are called for by the Trust.
The report is launched on Tuesday in Hyde Park for Energy Efficiency Week.
Flash flooding
The Energy Saving Trust was set up by the UK government in 1992 following the Rio Earth Summit.
Funded by government and the private sector, it aims to achieve sustainable and efficient energy use.
The report, carried out for the Trust by the UK Climate Impact Programme, says drier summers will lead to huge demands on water in London and subsidence in buildings from drier soil.
Climate change could also increase flash flooding as well as more intense smog in the summer months, the report says.
Weather presenters Michael Fish, Sian Lloyd and Fred Talbot will be on a floating map of the UK on the Serpentine in Hyde Park to launch the report.
