Cancer centre reassures patients
St Bartholomew's Hospital
The final 1m needed for the centre is still being raised
A 13m centre which aims to help breast cancer patients feel reassured is opening its doors in east London.

The Barts and The London Breast Care Centre has been created in the Grade I listed West Wing of St Bartholomew's Hospital, in Smithfield.

As well as state-of-the art clinical equipment it features art works to help patients feel "anywhere but here".

There is also a lingerie and swimwear boutique for woman who have had breast surgery and complimentary therapies.

Patient Margaret Hazard from the Barts Breast Care Patient Support Group said little details make all the difference to people who are in stressful situations.

We hope that our ideas will make the process that little bit easier for future patients

She said: "We asked for lockers so we didn't have to keep getting dressed and undressed and we got them.

"We wanted all the consultation rooms to be the same so none are associated with bad memories and we got that.

"We wanted a pager system so we didn't have to be glued to our seats waiting anxiously for our name to be called. We got this too.

"We hope that our ideas will make the process that little bit easier for future patients."

The cost of the centre is being covered by fundraising.

The fundraising team is in the process of raising the final 1m needed.
