Drivers will be offered advice on driving more safely

Throughout September, officers will offer drivers advice on how to make their journeys safer.

Officers will target areas where there is a higher percentage of speed-related collisions and where excessive speed has been identified.

They will be using mobile and static laser speed detection cameras to identify speeding drivers.

Acting Ch Supt Ian Chappell, of the Traffic Operational Command Unit, said: "Excessive and inappropriate speed is a significant factor in the frequency and severity of collisions."

He said speeding drivers remain a priority for the police in their ongoing work to increase road safety, despite road traffic deaths in London decreasing by 12% in the 12 months to April 2004 on the previous year.

Speeding drivers can face fines of up to �2,500 and three penalty points on their driving licence.
