London's first treatment centre for crack cocaine users is opening in a borough which has one of the biggest problems with the drug in the city. The Harbour Centre in Lambeth, south London, will offer addicts holistic treatments and a counselling service.
In 2001, 227 people were treated for crack addiction in Lambeth - 10% of the total for the whole of London.
Lambeth councillor for crime, Charles Anglin, told BBC London the centre would affect crime levels.
'Lack of places'
He said: "I am sure this will make a very substantial difference, and although the centre is new we've been trying to pioneer this kind of working over the last year.
"And people will tell you that the thing that has been holding this back has been the lack of places to treat people.
"This isn't rocket science. People know that this sort of stuff works.
"The Harbour is a good thing that will make a real difference to crime levels."
