'My advice - take your bags on board'
Baggage at Heathrow Airport
Many passengers still ignore whether they are entitled to compensation
Andrew Osborne, 35, from Hemel Hempstead, was among the thousands of British Airways passengers whose baggage was stranded at Heathrow.

It took him four days to find out that his bags would still be shipped to Switzerland by lorry - despite the fact that he is already back from his trip.

I was due to fly to Geneva, Switzerland, on Tuesday last week but the flight was cancelled because of the weather, so I eventually flew late Wednesday morning.

When we arrived, some people's baggage arrived and others' didn't. There was no explanation as to what had actually happened.

We were just given a form with a reference number on, and then we had to leave.

I kept trying to phone up a Swiss company on the form that we'd been given, and after a while I tried British Airways, but I didn't get through to them before Saturday - the line was constantly engaged.

That was when they told me that the luggage still hadn't left Heathrow.

But when I came back on Sunday, they told me that apparently they're sending the luggage out to Geneva by lorry, even though I was there in London.

It has to come back by lorry, too, hence they can't tell me when I'm going to get it.

While I was in Switzerland I tried not to buy too much because I didn't know what the compensation was.

I bought essential things for work because I didn't know what I should buy and if I was going to be covered.

They still haven't told me when I'll get my luggage back, not even approximately. I have written to the BA customer relations department, but they haven't replied.

I will probably fly BA again because they fly to destinations I go to, so you are almost forced, to some extent.

But you want to make sure you take your luggage on board rather than check it in.
