Tube 'go-slow' decision delayed
Bob Crow
Bob Crow is satisfied with assurances from Tube bosses
A decision on whether to call off a "go-slow" on the Tube on 9 and 10 December will be not be made until Monday, the day before any action.

Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union members plan to drive at no more than 25mph on some sections of track.

The union says it is satisfied with London Underground's (LU) assurances of more rigorous safety inspections.

But it wants clarification from private maintenance firms about "ambiguities" in their responses to its concerns.

The union executive met on Friday to discuss the safety assurances contained in a letter from LU's managing director Tim O'Toole.

'Constructive' approach

It followed talks on Wednesday and Thursday with Mr O'Toole and private maintenance firms about two derailments in October at Hammersmith and Camden Town.

RMT leader Bob Crow said on Thursday: "It is encouraging that the employers appear to have conceded the case for increasing the level of track inspections and other standards.

Mr O'Toole applauded the "constructive" approach taken by all parties at the meeting.

Thursday's talks between Mr Crow and Mr O'Toole followed an informal meeting between the two in the early hours of Wednesday.

They talked for two hours on the track near Hammersmith, while maintenance inspections were going on.

Mr Crow had said after the meeting that the frequency of maintenance inspections, lighting and other requirements fell "well short" of those needed to run a safe system.

The union is campaigning for maintenance work to be taken away from private firms and given back to LU.
