Blair handed anti-runway petition
Planes at Heathrow Airport
Stansted is favourite for a new runway
Prime Minister Tony Blair has been handed a 4,000-name petition calling for a third runway at Heathrow airport to be ruled out.

Campaigners warn another runway would add to the noise and pollution already suffered by residents in west London.

The government has reportedly decided against the development because of European pollution laws.

A decision is due this month with some airlines considering legal action if the judgment goes against them.

But London Labour MP Ann Keen said a third Heathrow runway would be a "step too far".

"Enough is enough," she said. "We need a sensible way forward, but not at the expense of the quality of life of local residents."

Ms Keen said there was "vast opposition" to the runway which would have serious implications for the local environment and quality of life of residents.

The government's decision will be part of the its 30-year strategy for the British aviation industry.

The number of air passengers is expected to rise from 117 million a year now to 300 million by 2030.
