New claim against 'Strangler'
Tony King and Tony Bromwich
Tony King was formerly known as 'Holloway Strangler' Tony Bromwich

A woman has told police in the UK she was attacked in the 1980s by the man known as the "Holloway Strangler", currently in jail in Spain accused of murdering two teenage girls on the Costa del Sol.

The woman, now 32, says she was attacked by Tony King when she was a teenager.

Fingerprint evidence has confirmed King is Tony Bromwich, who was convicted of a series of attacks on women in north London in 1986.

He changed his name by deed poll in 1999 after serving half his 10-year jail sentence.

Five police forces in the UK are now investigating possible links with other crimes.

Spanish police sources say King has admitted killing 17-year-old Sonia Carabantes last month and 19-year-old Rocio Wanninkhof in 1999.

Cases re-examined

King reportedly released letters in Spanish and English from prison in Malaga, apologising to the mothers of the two teenagers and begging their forgiveness.

Spanish police say he has also admitted raping three other woman.

Scotland Yard has set up Operation Washfield to oversee any more allegations against King in the UK.

A team of detectives is due to fly to Spain in the next few days to help the investigation.

Three cases linked to King at the time of the Holloway attacks are being re-examined as well as some outstanding murder cases.

Sonia Carabantes and Rocio Wanninkhof
King is said to have confessed to the Spanish murders

Sonia Carabantes was found strangled and beaten five days after disappearing on 14 August while returning home from a fiesta.

There was no evidence of sexual assault.

Rocio Wanninkhof disappeared from her home on 9 October, 1999 and was found strangled and naked. She had not been sexually assaulted.

Investigating officers said DNA samples taken from King's home matched DNA recovered in the two cases.

King was arrested after his girlfriend told police he had returned home on the morning Sonia disappeared with bloody clothes and a scratched face.

As Tony Bromwich he was found guilty of choking five women unconscious with a piece of electrical cable or rope and then molesting them.

An Old Bailey judge called him a "Jekyll and Hyde monster" whose wicked personality was caused by sexual inadequacies.
