The crossing is part of the regeneration of the area |
A design has been chosen for a new landmark bridge in east London.
Six entries from Europe's leading architectural firms were examined by a panel of experts for the 3m Leamouth crossing, which will be for pedestrians and cyclists only.
They chose the sculptural and structural "mast" proposal submitted by Whitbybird.
It was highly praised for its "striking appearance, innovative use of technologies and the consideration it gave to both bridge and river traffic".
The design was also commended for creating a strong visual spectacle as the 25-metre high cabled mast tilts to open, allowing easy access to and from the Thames for traffic on the River Lea.
The bridge also features inventive use of materials and lighting effects including an aluminium deck, sculptural staircases, LED lighting and crushed glass lightboxes.

The crossing will connect the Leamouth peninsula near the Millennium Dome to Canning Town Tube, bus and Docklands Light Railway station and will play a major part in regenerating the area.
The intention is to secure planning permission later this year so the bridge can be opened in 2005.
Leading architect and member of the design jury, Piers Gough, said: "Not only is the bridge visually stunning, providing a real landmark at the Leamouth Peninsula, but it also shows real consideration for the everyday requirements of the pedestrians and cyclists who will use the bridge."
The Whitbybird bridges team's director, Des Mairs, said: "We are delighted to have won this competition and, more importantly, to be responsible for an important element in the redevelopment of this part of London."
The competition was funded through Thames Gateway London Partnership and Tower Hamlets Council with additional public and private sector support.
