Connex complaints soar

Connex was fined for poor service in January 2002
Passenger complaints about Connex, the rail company which has been stripped of its franchise, rose sharply last year.

The London Transport Users Committee received 14% more complaints about Connex's South Eastern routes in the 12 months ending March 2003 than in the previous 12 months.

And there was an even bigger rise in complaints - up 20% - about another busy London commuter route company, South West Trains.

CAUSE FOR COMPLAINT
37% complained about for train performance and service quality
32% for redress and reimbursement
14% for station facilities and quality of service at stations
Last month, the Strategic Rail Authority announced it was terminating Connex's South Eastern franchise which had been due to run until 2006.

The punctuality figures released on Thursday by the Rail Passengers Council (RPC) in its annual report which showed that, nationally, the number of complaints it received from April 2002 to March 2003 totalled 11,192.

This was a 23% fall on the 2001-02 total and was in contrast to the rise in overall complaints received by the rail industry.
