Protest against tram plans
Tram
Several new tram projects are proposed
Protesters against plans for a new tram network in part of west London delivered thousands of postcards to the mayor at City Hall.

The 200m scheme proposed by Ken Livingstone would mean trams operating on the Uxbridge Road through Uxbridge to Shepherd's Bush via Acton, Ealing, Hanwell and Southall.

But residents do not want parts of the road closed to cars because they fear traffic will be diverted along residential streets.

They say about 27,000 cars and lorries use the road every day and closure would cause traffic chaos.

The Save Ealing's Streets campaign group plan to deliver nearly 4,000 postcards accompanied by a 30 foot canvas mock up of a tram.

The project was announced by Mr Livingstone in May last year, along with the 300m Cross River Tram, which will connect Camden in north London to Brixton in the south.

He said he expected about 50 million passengers a year would use the service which is expected to be completed by 2009.
