Tories romp home in Lincolnshire

Labour has been all but wiped out in Lincolnshire with only four seats on the county council while the Conservatives secured 60 seats.

The Tories even made seven gains in Labour's stronghold of Lincoln.

Lib Dems have five seats, Lincolnshire Independents four, Independents three and Boston Bypass one.

Lincoln Labour MP Gillian Merron said: "It was about what we were expecting. In Lincolnshire, it's always a Conservative council."

Conservative council leader Martin Hill said: "We are very pleased. Based on our results, it's looking very ominous for Labour. Their vote has just gone.

"The Labour vote is going because people are aware that the Labour government is in disarray."

'Difficult for Labour'

In the city of Lincoln, Labour held two seats and gained one from the Tories.

Ms Merron said: "There were never going to be any great surprises.

"It was always going to be difficult for Labour, so our expectations aren't great.

"I was glad Rob Parker, the leader of the Labour group on the county council, retained his seat."

The Conservatives went into the election with 46 seats, Labour 19, Liberal Democrats 8 and independents had four.

A turnout of 32% was recorded for the 10 wards in the city of Lincoln with a figure of 36% being achieved in the Grantham area.

The full council, which has been under Conservative control since 1997, is up for election.
