Noctule bats can live for up to 12 years |
A series of former RAF bunkers in Lincolnshire are being converted into hibernation areas for bats. A 9,000 grant will help the Woodland Trust build perches and boxes at the bunkers at Tattershall Carrs Woodlands to encourage the bats to breed.
The Lincolnshire Bat Group will also work on the project, which is being funded by Waste Recycling Group Ltd.
The bunkers were used as bomb shelters by the 617 Dambusters squadron during the Second World War.
The woodland near Lincoln is already home to hundreds of bats including brown long-eared, pipistrelle, natterers, noctule and Daubenton's bat.
Almost 100 buildings of various types were constructed in the woodland between 1940 and 1942 by the RAF.
