Female inmates at a Lincolnshire prison are being allowed to read bedtime stories to their children, as part of a new initiative. Prisoners at Morton Hall Women's Prison, near Lincoln, will record stories onto a CD as part of the Storybook Mums project.
The CDs will then be sent out to their sons and daughters.
A prison spokesperson said the scheme will help improve prisoners' skills and assist family relationships.
Les Bolam, head of learning and skills at the prison, said: "It's about two things, which is getting mums contacting their families and encouraging people to get involved in education and gain qualifications.
"What we're trying to do is make sure people have skills, training and qualifications so that when they leave prison they can get a job."
Brenda, who is serving four years at Morton Hall while her two children are in her home country South Africa, said the project would make prison life more bearable.
"It will make me feel better knowing that I have contact with my children in some way," she said.
"I know that they are going to listen to my voice, which will help me feel better."
