The future of a major cycle race in Lincolnshire has been thrown into doubt because of rising policing costs. The 50th anniversary Lincoln International Grand Prix takes place in the city on Sunday, with some of the world's top cyclists taking part.
But Lincolnshire Police is sending a 7,500 bill to organisers, saying only charitable events are now exempt from charges for cover from its officers.
Two years ago the police did not charge for their presence.
Last year, organisers were asked to pay half of the 6,000 cost of the policing the event. And this year, they are expected to pay the full cost.
Organisers say that unless the police policy changes, or more sponsorship cash is forthcoming, they will have a problem in future years.
Police say other commercial ventures, such as football matches, already have to pay for policing.
