Lincoln prison has made a series of improvements in the past year, according to an annual report. The Independent Monitoring Board for Lincoln has praised staff for their positive attitude to tackling bullying and preventing suicides at the jail.
But the prison's "outdated" gate and reception area were criticised and there were calls for sniffer dogs to stop drugs getting in.
The prison suffered almost 3m worth of damage during riots in 2002.
The chairman of the Independent Monitoring Board, John Webster, said: "The message is that it's a bit of a curates egg in many ways.
"There are lots of good things to be seen but there are areas that need addressing and we hope to see improvements throughout the prison."
