Lincoln is lucky for 'Ernie' loot
Lincoln is the luckiest place in the East Midlands for winning Premium Bond prizes for the second year running.

It has come top in the region, and also leapfrogged from 54th to 15th in the national league in the past year.

Elen Thomas, from National Savings and Investments, said 260,000 Lincs residents hold 300m in premium bonds.

She said: "There is no prediction that Lincoln will stay at the top, but looking back, it has been incredibly lucky the last two years."

She added: "With a lot of people worried about stock market and investment scandals, there has been a huge flight to safety.

"Premium bonds have the security of knowing your money is there, but with the excitement of possibly winning big."

Nationally, some 23 million people own Premium Bonds worth 26bn. They are put into a monthly draw, where people can win cash prizes of up to a 1m.

Bond numbers are entered for the prize draw picked by the Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment, better known as Ernie.
