Outline planning permission has been approved for a multi-million pound planning application for a waterways project in Boston and the Fens area. The �30m plan will see a new navigable waterway link created between the South Forty-Foot Drain and the River Witham.
The proposals are part of the Fens Waterways Link which aims to provide a navigable path through Lincoln, Boston and Spalding to Ely.
The full �100m scheme is dependent on the Boston part getting approval.
'Lincolnshire Broads'
The Boston plan calls for new stretches of canal, better bridges and improved flood defence facilities.
It has been described as Lincolnshire's answer to the Norfolk Broads.
The bigger project would include tidal control work, dredging and restoration of locks and bridges, bringing a ten-fold increase in the number of boats using the waterway.
The Environment Agency said the project would create a more stable water level though Boston, with the knock-on effects of more riverside developments such as restaurants and housing.
It said this was the biggest waterway enhancement project in Europe. It would open up 240 km of waterway, joining eastern rivers to the rest of the network.
