Pellet machine to help save swans

Chips are off the menu in a bid to improve the health of the swans
Swans in Lincoln could soon be getting their food from vending machines in a bid to improve their health.

It is one idea being considered to help the health of the birds on the city's Brayford Pool, where dozens have died.

Experts think a diet of junk food could be responsible for the deaths of swans over the past few years.

Vending machines could be installed along the Brayford so people can feed the birds on pellets of special bird food instead of junk food.

Eight organisations, including the RSPCA, Lincoln City Council and the Environment Agency, have met to discuss how to improve the situation.

Signs will be put up informing the public about the bird's nutrition.

University CCTV cameras in the area have been turned around so that a closer watch can be kept on the birds.

Overcrowding could also be a factor in the bird's poor health, the experts say.
