More female firefighters are needed
Lincolnshire Fire Service wants to triple the number of female firefighters in the county over the next five years.

The county currently has seven full-time female firefighters.

Senior officers say they are aiming to increase the figure from 5% to 15% by 2009.

The potential candidates are given a vertigo test, claustrophobia test and are tested on a ladder haul and dead weight lift.

The fire service had 193 full-time and 450 retained firefighters, according to figures from 2003.

Nick Davies, recruitment manager for the fire service, says they will not use positive discrimination in their search.

The fire service said it wants to make sure there are no misconceptions about the recruitment tests and job specifications.

It has already offered a series of awareness days to allow potential female candidates to find out more about the recruitment process.
