Freshers get alcohol-free option
Students in a bar (generic)
Drinking will not be the only choice for first year students
The University of Lincoln has set up an alternative freshers' week - for first year students who are not interested in drinking alcohol.

It is the first time the university's student union has taken such a step.

The aim is to offer day-time activities in addition to events which do involve alcohol - and to challenge the idea that students just drink all the time.

The alcohol-free agenda includes five-a-side football, a ghost walk, a boat cruise and cathedral and castle tours.

General manager of Lincoln University Student Union Darius Laws said: "You only have to speak to the student union bar managers up and down the country to know that students' pockets have been hit.

"Students are changing. The ilk of what is expected and what the stereotypical student is being challenged - students work, students have part-time jobs these days and it's not just all about alcohol."

The union's communications officer Dean Eldredge added: "This year we tried our best to cater for every type of student.

"We're also trying to curtail some of the binge drinking issues by attempting to at least offer alternatives to students so they don't feel forced into a stereotypical drinking culture."
