Planners acknowledge Louth has a unique character |
Plans for a revamp of Louth town centre have been revealed. Proposals include changing the flow of traffic, making areas better for pedestrians and looking at the provision of car parking.
East Lindsey District Council says the project is looking to improve the town, not interfere with the character which has made it so popular.
Planning experts say the town has come to be dominated by traffic and requires a subtle makeover.
Right approach
They say the aim is to make it work for people, as a place to meet and live, as well as a centre for commerce.
Modern road markings might disappear entirely and be replaced by a more "pedestrian friendly" design.
Robert Walker, from East Lindsey District Council, said: "People don't want Louth to change. Louth is a gem that just needs polishing.
"Louth has developed over hundreds of years it would be wrong to come in and try and wave a magic wand and change things dramatically.
"But there are things that need to be addressed, to make the town work better."
Bids for lottery and European funding are being put together and the council hopes to move the project forward by early 2005.
