The 67-year-old from Crowland denies misconduct in public office through allegedly attempting to influence the route of the proposed Crowland bypass.

The judge, Mr Justice Lawler QC, reminded the jury at Sheffield Crown Court of Mr Speechley's long record of public service.

He told them to take their time and not to rush their decision.

The judge concluded his summing up by looking at the evidence given by the council's Chief Executive, David Bowles.

Mr Bowles said that when he told Mr Speechley the issue would have to be investigated, he allegedly said "You've got me. I'll have to resign. This is a criminal offence".
