Officials at Lincolnshire County Council say more than �3m has been spent this winter on gritting the county's roads. It is an unusually large bill this year, reflecting the high snowfalls.
The authority has responsibility for gritting and keeping clear around 1,700 miles of roads, using 38 gritters.
But the council's road engineers emphasised a strategic reserve means the money for gritting will never run out when needed.
Storm damage
David Davies, senior road maintenance engineer for the Highways Department, pointed out his team are responsible for keeping the roads clear in all kinds of adverse weather conditions.
He said: "When there are floods on the highways we also deal with those.
"Of course it is difficult to move water around so we try to unblock gullies and sand bag a few places.
"One of our major duties is when there are gales we remove trees from the road and that requires co-operation with the police."
