Residents are urged to look out for the creature |
The Environment Agency is fighting to save a rare crayfish in Lincolnshire, which could soon become extinict throughout the UK. The River Witham is the only remaining site in the county where the White-Clawed Crayfish can be found.
About 10,000 homes along the river, from South Witham to Grantham and Long Bennington, will receive leaflets.
White-Clawed Crayfish are being wiped out because the larger American Signal Crayfish, which was introduced and farmed for human consumption, is better at seeking out food and shelter.
It also carries a disease which the White-Clawed Crayfish is highly susceptable to.
The Signal Crayfish escaped captivity and, in some cases, was deliberately released into the wild.
