The Special Olympics GB have begun, after a glittering opening ceremony in Leicester on Saturday night.

About 2,700 athletes with learning disabilities will compete in 21 events until Friday.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown attended the official opening which took place at the Walkers Stadium, home of Leicester City Football Club.

Competitors will take part in a variety of activities including athletics, swimming, football and kayaking.

However, the build-up to the event has been overshadowed by a funding shortfall, with Leicester council tax payers picking up an £800,000 bill after organisers failed to reach their sponsorship target.

The games are held every two years and involve athletes with learning disabilities who compete in events taking place at 20 venues across Leicestershire and Rutland.
