Domestic abuse campaign launched

A campaign to tackle domestic abuse has been launched in Nottingham.

The borough of Gedling has the highest number of reported incidents in the county, with 4,500 woman affected.

Now the council is working with police, Women's Aid Advice Centre and Victim Support to encourage those facing abuse to access help, support and protection.

Figures indicate that someone facing abuse will go through an average of 35 incidents before seeking help, and the initiative aims to reduce this.

Advertising on buses, posters and leaflets will highlight the range of support services available and how to contact them.

Councillor Ged Clarke, on Gedling Borough Council, said: "Domestic abuse is a hidden crime and we need to take away the fear of reporting it.

"In Gedling we have a strong network of support services and this campaign will help to increase awareness of these services and positively encourage those affected to access the support they need."

The initiative also highlights the fact such abuse does not just affect women, one in six men will be a victim of domestic violence in their lifetime.
