Residents vote against eco-town

Opponents have claimed the town will overwhelm the area

People living near a proposed 15,000-home new town in Leicestershire have voted against the plans in an unofficial poll.

A total of 877 residents said they did not want the development at Pennbury. Eleven voted in favour.

Results of the poll organised by Thurnby and Bushby Parish Council will be fed back to the county council.

The Co-operative Group, behind the plans, said the sustainable community would not encroach on villages.

The company announced that the site, on a government shortlist of 15, would include land to grow vegetables for the local community, green open space for cycling and walking and wildlife habitats.

Simon Galton, who is campaigning against the plans, said: "I take this as a very, very strong and clear message by the people of Bushby that they don't want this proposal."

The Co-operative Group is running series of five open days in the local area starting on 10 June to get feedback from residents.
