Construction should start at the end of the current season |
Leicester Tigers have been given the go-ahead to transform their Welford Road ground into a spectacular stadium. The city council's planning committee agreed to the project for a 60m new-look stadium with a 30,000 capacity on Tuesday evening.
The club hopes to start construction work at the end of the current season.
Club chairman Peter Tom said: "This is a tremendously exciting time for everyone associated with this famous rugby club."
Managing Director David Clayton added : "For the last four years we've sold out every league and cup game and we just need to increase the stadium capacity to the demand there is to watch the Tigers."
The council planning committee said it still wants to consult the club about traffic assessment for the site.
