Shoppers will be asked about the city's future

The council is holding a consultation at the Shires shopping centre asking shoppers to submit their wish lists.

Councillor Patrick Kitterick said it was important to think about the future now as planning is time-consuming.

Martin Traynor, chief executive of the city's chamber of commerce, said one of his goals was to improve training and skills of the workforce in the city.

Affordable housing

Councillor Kitterick said the consultation was about overall goals as well as specific infrastructure proposals.

Peter Wilkinson, an independent planning consultant, said major facilities need to be brought into the city centre, such as sports facilities and swimming pools.

And Dave Brazier from the housing charity Shelter called for more affordable housing, including some in the proposed Ashton Green development in the northwest of the city.

The process is part of the consultation on the city's new Local Development Framework which maps out the city's development until 2026.
