Police in Leicestershire have said they are disappointed with the results of their summer drink-drive campaign. In total 139 motorists were found to be over the limit when tested as part of the campaign from 30 July to 2 September in the county.
Of those who were found to be over the limit, 40% of them, 56 drivers, were under the age of 25.
Road safety officer John Budulis said he was disappointed so many young people were flouting the law.
'Zero tolerance'
"It appears that young men in particular are continuing to ignore our warnings and are getting behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol," said Mr Budulis.
"I hope the 56 young motorists who will be losing their licences after being caught during this campaign will serve as a warning to others."
He added Leicestershire Police would continue with their zero-tolerance policy towards drink-driving even though the campaign had finished.
Only 19 of the 139 drivers caught were women. All those who tested positive face at least a 12-month driving ban.
