Fight to save city's post office

The post office will move into a WH Smith store
Campaigners said they would fight the planned closure of a post office in Leicester city centre.

The Bishop Street post office is to close in November and services will be taken over by a branch within WH Smith in Gallowtree Gate.

Some residents have said this will lead to poorer services and access problems for people with disabilities.

Adrian Wales from the Post Office said a good service would continue to be provided for the people of Leicester.

'Heavy losses'

He said: "We're not about getting rid of the service in Leicester, we're not about downgrading the service.

"What we're trying to do is look at ways we can continue to provide a good service to customers in Leicester without the need to get rid of the post office."

Royal Mail plans to move more than 70 branches into WH Smith stores across the country.

The company said the move would put branches on a "sound financial footing, after many years of heavy losses".
