Lord Attenborough said he was pleased the items were going on display |
A collection of Picasso ceramics owned by actor and director Lord Attenborough has gone on display in Leicester. More than 100 works will be on show at the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, the first time the pieces have been displayed as a collection.
Lord Attenborough said the exhibition was dedicated to his daughter and granddaughter, Jane and Lucy, who died in the Asian tsunami in 2004.
The items will be on show to the public until 30 September.
"The gallery has been brilliant and hugely generous in terms of the space and presentation," said Lord Attenborough.
"It's dedicated to our daughter and granddaughter. Rather than being lost and put away in a little box, Jane and Lucy's lives are here as a part of the exhibition.
"Through Jane and Lucy, we can present this genius's work to tens of thousands of people."
Picasso's ceramics work centred around the Madoura pottery factory in Vallauris, France.
He worked mostly with plates, jugs and tiles but he also experimented with a combination of ceramics, painting and sculpture.
The exhibition in Leicester is said to explore the artist's developing relationship with ceramics from 1947, until his death in 1973.
