Traffic scheme to help bottleneck
Plans to improve traffic congestion in an area of Leicestershire have been given the go-ahead.

The 1m project is due to start in Melton Mowbray in spring 2007 and aim to improve the Norman Way junction.

Three main roads out of the city - the A606, A607 and A6006 - meet on Norman Way, often causing traffic jams.

The improvements are a response to complaints about traffic from traders and residents. But some councillors believe the plans are not enough.

'Reduce queues'

"Bypasses are springing up everywhere - Oakham's getting one in just a few weeks so why not Melton?" said Leicestershire County Councillor Matthew O'Callaghan.

"These junction works will give short-term relief but it is only short-term and we really need a bypass."

Extra lanes will be added to the Norman Way junction to "significantly reduce traffic queues", the county council said.

Nicholas Rushton, deputy leader of Leicestershire County Council, added: "These proposals are fantastic news for Melton and this part of the town is going to benefit significantly as a result."
