Health service given 40m boost
Almost 40m is being invested in building or expanding nine health centres in Leicester.

Work is already underway on primary care centres in Narborough Road, St Peters and Westcotes.

Other six projects include new GP surgery buildings in Bede Island, Belgrave and Humberstone.

Alongside this, Charnwood Health Centre will be knocked down and the health centre at De Montfort university is to be extended.

The choice of the first schemes was based on areas in the city that have the greatest health problems

A new building is planned near the city centre, near the Groby Road or St Augustine area.

The work is part of a 25 year plan to improve the city's health services, published by Leicester Local Improvement Finance Trust (LIFT), a partnership between the city council and the two primary pare trusts.

Michael Cooke, chair of Leicester LIFT's strategic partnering board, said: "As everything cannot be done at once, the developments are being approached on a phased basis.

"The choice of the first schemes was based on areas in the city that have the greatest health problems, the most unsuitable existing premises and where the right site was available."

Another eight schemes are being planned.
