Police target underage drinkers
A crackdown on underage drinking in an area of Leicestershire is proving a success, police claim.

Officers and council chiefs in Oadby and Wigston have launched the campaign because of an increase in reports of anti-social behaviour.

Council officers said they have been removing hundreds of empty cans and bottles from parks in the past month.

Police are now confiscating alcohol from youths and are visiting off-licences to remind them of the law.

Binge drinking

Insp Martin Halse said: "We want to crackdown on alcohol-related anti-social behaviour and confiscating alcohol from people under the age of 18 is one way of tackling the problem.

"In the last month we have confiscated a large amount of bottles and cans from young people some of them as young as 11.

"We know this is having an effect, because reports of anti-social behaviour are down and the young people are not meeting up in such large groups.

"We are also working with other agencies who are engaging with the young people to highlight other issues such as the detrimental effect alcohol and binge drinking can have on their health."
