The ambulance service would be the second largest in the country |
Major expansion plans for the East Midlands Ambulance Service are going before the public for consultation. The service covers Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland. But it is now proposed to add South Lincolnshire and Northants.
If the change goes ahead it will be the biggest service outside London.
The department of health said a 14-week public consultation would give people a chance to study the plans as well as give their views.
It will run at the same time as consultations about a shake-up of the other NHS organisations, the primary healthcare trusts and strategic health authorities.
If the scheme is approved the new ambulance service could be up and running as soon as April 2007
