The chairman of the National Federation of Women's Institutes has died suddenly, the group has revealed.

Barbara Gill, 63, who had held the role since June 2003, died on Thursday at her home in Loughborough, Leics.

Mrs Gill became a WI member in 1974, and was elected to the national Board of Trustees in 1996.

She was an active campaigner on issues ranging from domestic violence to the environment and healthy eating, and was described as a dedicated leader.

Leading light

Jana Osborne, the federation's general secretary, said: "We are all deeply saddened and shocked by the loss of Barbara and our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time.

"Barbara's passion for the WI and her dedication to the welfare of communities and society inspired us all.

"Barbara was the leading light of the organisation who was as much at ease at a local WI meeting as she was when meeting with government ministers or celebrities.

"Her voluntary work and her huge achievement in raising the profile of the WI will be remembered, as will her tenacity, commitment and principles."
