Leicester will host the British Academy Shakespeare Lecture
De Montfort University (DMU) is to host the British Academy Shakespeare Lecture on Wednesday - the first time it will have taken place outside London.

Guest lecturer at the Leicester venue is Alan Dessen, professor of English at the University of North Carolina.

It will look at theatre history in the production of Shakespeare's plays, particularly at Bankside Globe, London.

Professor Dessen is the co-editor of the Shakespeare Performed section of Shakespeare Quarterly.

The lecture - Staging Matters: Shakespeare, the Director, and the Theatre Historian - will be introduced by Prof Julia Briggs, professor of English at De Montfort.

The university hosted the first British Shakespeare Society conference in 2003.

Prof Judy Simons, pro vice-chancellor at De Montfort University, said: "Hosting the British Academy Shakespeare Lecture which attracts international scholars is an honour which underlines De Montfort University's reputation for excellence in English and Drama."

The British Academy Shakespeare Lecture has a reputation for attracting the most distinguished academics in the field.
