More maternity care is announced
Young children living in part of Leicester are to benefit with the appointment of a number of new maternity care assistants.

The role of the care assistant is to support families during pregnancy and in the first months of a baby's life.

The new recruits have been appointed to improve the lives of children under the age of four living in Highfields.

The four posts have been funded by Surestart and Leicester NHS Trust and will be based at a new centre.

Easy access

They work alongside midwives offering advice to women in their homes and in GP surgeries.

They can also give advice on benefits and offer translation and interpretation services.

From April, women in the Highfields area will be able to access midwives and maternity care assistants at the new Sure Start centre, which will open off Sparkenhoe Street.

Jane Turnock, community midwife at the trust said: "The child-friendly Sure Start centre will be a 'one-stop shop.'

"This means people will be able to access all health professionals, including midwives, health visitors, nutritionists, community workers and child care facilities under one roof."
