Ms Blears is meeting faith leaders as part of a national tour |
Home Office minister Hazel Blears has met representatives from the Muslim community in Leicester to discuss issues after the London bombings. She is conducting a national tour to discuss ways of eradicating extremism.
The Home Office announced the talks in a bid to come up with ways to prevent young Muslims becoming isolated and attracted to extremists.
Ms Blears first met Leics' chief constable Matt Baggot before speaking to the city's community leaders.
'Too draconian'
Muslim leaders at the event in Leicester warned that the government's anti-terror measures were ill-advised.
Suleman Nagdi, spokesman for the Federation of Muslim Organisations in Leicester, said: "We think the way forward is not for legislation but to engage with the community.
"These particular laws are too draconian and they are uncalled for.
"There is existing legislation at present that can deal with this issue."
After the meeting, Ms Blears said: "We are trying to consult as much as we can but recognise that the events of July 7 quite rightly have caused us to review the situation and we have to have measures in place."
