Traffic emissions are believed to add to climate change
A research centre to tackle traffic congestion and global warming is to be set up in Loughborough.

The facility will specialise in creating new technology to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

Researchers at the 15m project will look into creating cars which run on fuel cells and low carbon engines.

A second centre, at a location yet to be confirmed, will investigate how to reduce congestion by making better use of the UK's road networks.

It is hoped the centres will also encourage foreign manufacturers to see the UK as a forerunner in environmental research.

Industry Minister Jacqui Smith said: "By making better use of our road network, these centres could play a key role in reducing congestion on Britain's motorways and improving the environment.

"We are also sending a strong signal to manufacturers around the world that the UK is the place to come to carry out research in cutting-edge areas."
